PLOT SUMMARY
Set in 1946-1947, “42” follows Jackie Robinson’s journey from the Negro Leagues to becoming the first Black player in MLB when he is signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers. At the time, baseball was segregated, and Black players were not allowed in Major League Baseball. Branch Rickey, the Dodgers’ general manager, takes a bold stand against racism and signs Robinson to play for the Dodgers, knowing the decision will face intense backlash. In the years following World war II baseball in the united stats grew in prominence becoming a symbol of democracy yet for African Americans the pervasive specter of racism and jim crow laws remained barriers to equality. Black players many of whom served in the war we’re still restricted to playing in the Negro leagues meanwhile the 1946 Major League Baseball season saw 16 teams and 400 white players on the roster in contrast to the following seasons 399.
Robinson faces extreme racism from fans, opposing teams, and even some of his own teammates. He is spat on, insulted, and threatened, yet he remains strong, following Rickey’s advice to resist the urge to retaliate. His courage and talent eventually earn him the respect of his teammates and fans. However, Hobbs faces corruption and betrayal. The team’s owner and gamblers try to manipulate him, while his past comes back to haunt him.
